Major Dhyan Chand, popularly known as Hockey Magician, was a highly respected hockey player.
His ability to score goals was amazing and often the opposing team was seen kneeling in front of this Indian player.
His birthday on 29 August is celebrated as National Sports Day in India and the President of India has also honored the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dronacharya Awards on this day.
An Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand, who won three Olympic medals in the hockey field, was undoubtedly one of the best hockey players of all time. He was a member of the Indian international hockey team at that time, when the Indian hockey team dominated the whole world.

The Indian team that won the gold medal in the Amsterdam Olympics of 1928 and the Lones Angels Olympics of 1932 was the captain of the Indian team Dhyan Chand.
India's first match in the 1932 Olympics was against Japan, which they won 11–1.

After the Olympics, the Indian team also made many international tours to play in the United States, England and other countries. At the end of the tour, India had won 34 of the 37 matches played. In this tour, Chand scored 133 goals out of 338 goals scored by India.
In 1934 he was made the captain of the Indian hockey team and under his captaincy took the team to the Berlin Olympics of 1936. There he also showed his magic and won India the third Olympic gold medal.
He continued to play hockey until the late 1940s and then retired as Major of the Army in 1956. After retiring, he became the coach of the Indian team.

The same year, the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan, India's third highest honor. After retirement, he started working as a coach in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. He later accepted the position of being the head hockey coach of the National Institute of Sport in Patiala and served for the same number of years.
Chand spent his last days in his village Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Major Dhyan Chand died on 3 December 1979 at All India Institute of Medical Science, Delhi. He was cremated on the martyr grounds of Jhansi.
