Dhirubhai Ambani success story

Dhirubhai Ambani

A man who did not even complete high school education.  He was from such a poor family that he had to work from his teenage years to apply for breakfast hares and to fill the oil at the petrol pump to run the expenditure.

When such a boy said goodbye to the world as an elder, the value of his wealth was more than 62 thousand crores.

If you still do not recognize this personality then we are talking about Dhirubhai Ambani.

A successful face that gave hope to every poor person that money should not be fixed to succeed.  Success comes only to those who risk it.

Dhirubhai has proved time and again that taking risks is the mantra to move forward, not business.

 • early life

Dheeraj Lal Hiralal Ambani was born on 28 December 1932 in Chorwad, a small village in Junagadh, Gujarat.

Father Gordhanbhai Ambani was a teacher.  Mata Jamnaben was a normal housewife.

Dhirubhai had four other siblings.  It was not easy for teacher Gordhanbhai to follow such a large family.

At one time, due to financial troubles, Dhiru Bhai had to leave his studies in the middle and his schooling also remained incomplete.

To help his father, Dhirubhai started doing minor tasks.

 • Start of business journey

The example that many failures are hidden behind every success, Dhirubhai stands up to Ambani very accurately.

After leaving studies, Dhirubhai first started selling fruits and snacks, but to no avail.

He set his mind and started selling pakoras at Girnar, a religious tourist spot near the village.

This work was completely dependent on the tourists coming, which was good at certain times of the year, but there was no significant benefit in the rest of the time.

Dhirubhai also stopped this work after some time.  After the first two failures in business, his father advised him to take up a job.

 • Business even during the job

Dhirubhai's elder brother Ramneek Bhai used to work in Yemen in those days.

With his help, Dhirubhai also got a chance to visit Yemen.

There he started a job at a petrol pump of a shell company and reached the rank of a manager due to his qualification in just two years.

Even during this job, he was less inclined towards it and more towards the opportunities of doing business.

He considered every possibility at that time how he could become a successful business man.

Two minor incidents describe his passion for business.  Both of these incidents occurred at the time when he was serving in a shell company.

Where they used to work, the working personnel used to get tea for only 25 paise, but Dhirubhai used to go to tea in a big hotel nearby where he had to pay 1 rupee for tea.

When asked the reason for this, he told that big businessmen come to him in big hotels and talk about business.  I am going to listen to them so that I can understand the nuances of business.

Dhirubhai studied business management in his own way.  Who later hired a degree-holder from Whitern and Howard in a traditional way.

Similarly, the second incident indicates his connoisseur's ability to capitalize on the opportunity.  It happened that silver coins were prevalent in Yemen in those days.

Dhirubhai realized that the silver value of these coins was higher than the value of the coins and he started supplying these coins to a London company.  By the time the Yemeni government came to know of this, they had made big profits.

Both these incidents were indicating that Dhirubhai Ambani has all the qualities to become a successful businessman.

 • Challenges and successes

Dhirubhai's time was passing in Yemen that the fight for independence started there and many Indians had to leave Yemen.  Dhirubhai also had to leave Yemen in the face of this trouble.  Ishwar started to create the conditions to make a successful businessman.

After leaving this job, he decided to do business instead of job, but needed money to start business.

Dhirubhai did not have a large amount of money to invest, so he started the business of spices and sugar with his maternal uncle Trimbaklal Damani.  This is where the foundation of Reliance Commercial Corporation was laid.  Subsequently, Reliance entered the cotton business.

Here too, success kissed Dhirubhai's footsteps and soon he became the doer of the Bombay Sutra Merchant Association.  This business was full of risks and their maternal uncle did not like the risk, so soon the two parted ways.

This did not make much difference to Reliance and in 1966 Reliance Textiles came into existence.  In the same year, Reliance established a textile mill in Naroda, Ahmedabad.

The branding of Vimal was done in such a way that it soon became recognized in every household and Vimal's cloth became a big Indian name.  Vimal was actually the son of his elder brother Ramanik Lal.

In the midst of all these struggles, he was married to Kokilaben, who gave him two sons Mukesh and Anil and two daughters Deepti and Nina.

He never looked back after this and Reliance became India's largest company, along with companies like Petroleum and Telecom.

Amidst all this, Dhirubhai Ambani was also accused of influencing the policies of the government and profiting from the shortcomings of the policies.

Much has also been written on the business confrontation between him and Nusli Wadia.  Inspired by his life, a film Guru was made in which Abhishek Bachchan performed his role.

His health deteriorated amidst a growing business and he died on 6 July 2002.  After his death, his work was handled by elder son Mukesh Ambani.
